Universities should only admit top students
TOPIC: Some people believe that universities should only accept students with the highest marks while others believe that students of all ages and ability levels should be able to attend universities. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
In this contemporary world, a great number of students apply for higher education every year. Nonetheless, not all are accepted into universities due to certain admission criteria that only benefit those with higher grades. While this win the favor of most people, opponents believe that students must be given equal educational opportunity regardless of ages and abilities. I wholeheartedly support the former opinion and will discuss both sides in the following essay.
On the one hand, tertiary institutions set certain standards to ensure that the pupils get admitted are able to catch up with the huge amount of course material and can be a source of motivation for one another. Grades and achievements in most well-known tests, such as IELTS or SAT, can give universities a relatively accurate aspect of a student’s eligibility for a course. As there are not enough space and resources for all students, the fact that institutes can decide who deserve acceptance through academic readiness is rational. This can also guarantee that the students in one class are of similar ability, so they can keep pace with the learning process without affecting others.
On the other hand, the view that every university enroller should be admitted does make sense. Indeed,quite a number of notable figures in today’s society did not obtain high marks at school. For instance, in most Vietnamese government bodies, there are individuals who failed at school or even did not attend university. Yet, they still achieve success in real-life situations, get bang-up jobs and gain respect from others. This suggests that the assessment of one person should not completely rely on his school grades, and that everyone has the right to obtain higher education in their dream university.
In conclusion, university entrance is not necessarily based on school marks and can be available to anyone. However, this can have a negative impact on the quality of education because of the diverse abilities and ages of students. Thus, I support the opinion of institutions admitting pupils with impressive school grades for the sustainability of education and society.
